The number of doctors working in Nova Scotia is on the rise. From April 1, 2022, to March 31, 2023, a total of 168 doctors began practising in Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia Health welcomed 155 doctors into their ranks, while the IWK Health added 13 doctors to their team. As a result, we have achieved a net gain of 86 physicians.
“The recruitment of doctors and other healthcare professionals is truly a team effort,” said Health and Wellness Minister Michelle Thompson. “Working together we continue to showcase Nova Scotia as a great place to live, work and raise a family. We know that there is still much to do but our hard work is starting to see results.”
Out of the doctors recruited in the past year, 78 are family doctors, and the remaining 90 specialize in various fields. These dedicated professionals are now serving communities throughout Nova Scotia.
In the previous years from 2018 to 2022, Nova Scotia Health successfully recruited 164, 127, 129, and 130 physicians, respectively, totalling 550 new physicians recruited to the province.
The Office of Healthcare Professionals Recruitment works closely with Nova Scotia Health, the IWK, and other valuable partners to attract and retain doctors, nurses, and other essential healthcare providers.
Together, our PC team is focused on delivering better care, faster, to Nova Scotians.
