Barbara Adams: Debert Court & Victoria Way are a shocking symptom of a health crisis

Progressive Conservative long-term care critic Barbara Adams says the Liberal government’s failure to recruit doctors is causing upheaval and concern for seniors who reside in long-term care homes in Debert and Truro.

Recently, families of residents of Debert Court and Cedarstone Victoria Way home received letters from the residences’ management saying the lack of physician coverage was forcing big changes, including refusal to allow residents who received care in hospital to return back to their homes.

“Many seniors live in nursing homes because their families can no longer meet their medical needs and doctors are an important part of that care,” Adams said. “The situation at Debert Court and Victoria Way is a shocking symptom of a crisis that is failing vulnerable citizens.”

Adams said the uncertainty that accompanies the changes at Debert Court and Victoria Way will cause many residents to worry they will be without a home if they need medical care.

“The McNeil Liberals must act immediately to ensure physician coverage is in place for residents,” she concluded. “After contributing all their lives, those seniors deserve to live without fear of being evicted.”
