HALIFAX - The NDP Education Minister who the Nova Scotia Teachers’ Union wanted Premier Darrell Dexter to fire is making a comeback for current NDP Leader Claudia Chender.
Ramona Jennex is back as the NDP candidate for Kings South, the constituency she represented from 2009 to 2013 in the Dexter government.
After years of NDP cuts to public education, the Nova Scotia Teachers’ Union urged Dexter to fire Jennex as Education Minister. Dexter refused.
“I first got into politics in 2013 because of the chaos and carnage to public education caused by Darrell Dexter, Ramona Jennex and the NDP,” said Brian Wong, PC candidate for Waverley-Fall River-Beaver Bank. “Nova Scotians don’t want to go back to the days of NDP education cuts, they want to keep making it happen for better schools with Team Tim Houston.
The Houston government has increased funding for P-12 education from $1.166 billion when it came to office in 2021 to $1.337 billion in the current fiscal year. This represents an increase of almost 13.7%.
Two former presidents of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union - Paul Wozney and Ryan Lutes - are running for the NDP in Sackville-Cobequid and Bedford Basin.
“It doesn’t matter how many union presidents run for the NDP. Claudia Chender has shown her true colours about what she feels about public education by having Ramona Jennex, one of the architects of NDP slash and burn of our schools, run for her party,” concluded Wong.
