In these challenging times of high inflation, high interest rates, and the added burden of the Liberal carbon tax, hard-working Nova Scotians deserve a break. Tim Houston’s PC government is committed to supporting Nova Scotians by putting more money back in their pockets. Here are just a few of the ways your PC team is working to make life more affordable.
Tax Relief
For too long, Nova Scotians have faced high taxes under previous Liberal and NDP governments. Our PC government took action by ending bracket creep in Nova Scotia—something that both the Liberals and NDP talked about but never did. This means more of your paycheck stays where it belongs: in your pocket. You can learn more about what bracket creep is here.
We aren't stopping there. We know we need more skilled tradespeople to keep building up Nova Scotia. That’s why we introduced the More Opportunity for Skilled Trades program, which gives eligible tradespeople, nurses, and film workers a tax break on their first $50,000 earned per year in Nova Scotia. This significant tax break helps our young people build a life in the province they grew up in. It also encourages skilled young workers from other regions to come to Nova Scotia and help us build up our province.
Helping Our Seniors
Our seniors, many of whom are on fixed incomes, are feeling the squeeze of high rates, inflation, and the Liberal Carbon Tax. To ease these pressures, Tim Houston and the PC Party have delivered the Seniors Care Grant, putting over $600 into the pockets of seniors. This grant helps with home maintenance, heating costs, or other essential needs. This benefit is not considered taxable income, so seniors don’t need to worry about losing other benefits as a result of accepting the grant.
Supporting Our Families
Working families are the backbone of our economy and essential to our province’s growth, yet they’re under increasing strain. Our PC team has been working hard to lower the cost of childcare while also boosting the number of spaces available across the province. We are well on our way to delivering $10-a-day childcare, which means more money stays in families’ pockets.
Another area of savings is our Children’s Sports and Arts Tax Credit. Extracurricular activities can be expensive, but they play a crucial role in children’s development into strong, contributing members of society. Tim Houston’s PC Government introduced the Children’s Sports and Arts Tax Credit to help families afford these valuable activities.
Tim Houston’s government is also moving forward on a pay-what-you can school lunch program this fall. This will deliver affordable health school lunches to our children to ensure the next generation is fueled for success. It will be affordable for all, and free for those that need it.
Housing
After years of the LIberals and NDP planning for decline, there was no plan to build more housing. Under Tim Houston’s PC Government thousands of housing units are being built across Nova Scotia.
- We’re cutting red tape so housing units can be approved faster.
- We’ve kept the rent cap in place while housing supply catches up, helping to balance the market.
- We are building the first public housing units in decades and are renovating the current stock to ensure they are livable.
- We’ve established several First-Time Homebuyer Incentives to help Nova Scotians enter the housing market.
We continue to push for more supply to help the market cool and prices fall. We will keep building up Nova Scotia.
A Plan to Keep Building Up Nova Scotia
Tim Houston’s PCs are the only party with a plan to support Nova Scotians, including fighting against harmful policies like the Liberal Carbon Tax. While Zach Churchill stands with the Trudeau-Liberals, Tim Houston and the PCs stand with Nova Scotians.
Together, we will keep building up Nova Scotia.
