SPRYFIELD, N.S. - PC candidate Brendan Maguire says the Nova Scotia Liberal Party platform doesn’t accurately cost their promise to expand the Heating Assistance Rebate Program.
The Liberal platform claims, “We will expand the Heating Assistance Rebate Program to help low-income Nova Scotians with their energy bills, saving them $1,000 a year.”
Maguire says the promise won’t come to fruition because the Churchill Liberals are not properly costing the program.
“The Liberal costing document says this initiative will cost $52.5 million per year,” said Maguire. “Increasing the benefit to $1,000 per household would cost $140 million every year.”
“There’s an $87.5 million hole in this promise.”
Maguire says it will become more expensive to heat your home because the Liberals will introduce a sneaky carbon tax in the form of a cap-and-trade system. Government costing documents concluded that a cap-and-trade program, which puts a price on carbon, will drive up the cost of gas by nearly 30 cents per litre.
