Trailblazing entrepreneur and business advocate Lisa Coates will carry the PC banner for Dartmouth North in the next provincial election.
“I know and love this community and want to give back by representing Dartmouth North in the Legislature,” says Coates. “The values that Tim Houston and the PC Party hold - like making Nova Scotia an economic, social and environmental leader in the world - is what this province needs. We all want to live in a place where we can thrive.”
Coates is a bi-racial, only child raised by her single white Cape Breton mother. She’s journeyed from employee, to entrepreneur to cancer survivor to employee to student to mentor all the way as a single female warrior. Along the way, she’s worked as a bartender, real estate agent and Atlantic Canada’s first Black female general contractor.
Coates is the founder of the Nova Scotia Professional Black Business Network, which aims to grow and foster professional development within the province’s black communities. She’s a former member of the Centre for Women in Business and has served as a board member of Better Business Bureau for the Atlantic Provinces and a proud supporter of Women’s Unlimited and Nova Scotia Film Industry.
“Having worked closely with homeowners, investors, landlords, tenants, and businesses in Dartmouth, I have a deep understanding of the most important issues facing this community: affordable housing, supporting workers, and ensuring those who need help get it,” says Coates. “It’s been 25 years since a black woman’s voice was in the Legislature. I’m looking forward to working with Tim Houston in a progressive and diverse government that reflects all of Nova Scotia.”
Coates built a successful general construction company based in Burnside from the ground up. Her work ethic, knowledge, and the results she got for her clients earned her industry awards from TrustedPros™ in 2016 and 2018 for Dartmouth Contractor.
“Lisa has the experience, passion, and drive to be a great representative for the people of Dartmouth North,” says PC Leader Tim Houston. “She will be a fierce advocate for citizens and the business community and a much-much needed voice in the legislature as MLA.”
Coates lives in Dartmouth with her dog Miss Melanie the Doxie.
