HALIFAX, N.S. – A longtime west end Halifax community leader with experience in education, healthcare and government is running in Halifax Chebucto for the Nova Scotia PC Party.
Tonya Malay was nominated as the party’s candidate in the constituency in the next provincial general election.
“I am running to be MLA for Halifax Chebucto to bring my commitment to helping my neighbours and community as their voice in Premier Tim Houston’s government,” said Malay. “Team Tim Houston is making it happen and getting results for Nova Scotians. We need to keep moving forward as a province under Tim Houston’s leadership and not go back to where the Liberals and NDP left us.”
Born and raised in Nova Scotia, Malay has lived in Halifax Chebucto with her husband and four children for more than 20 years. A graduate of Saint Mary’s University, she began her professional career as an educational program assistant. She also worked for the federal government and in the healthcare sector.
Malay’s extensive volunteer experience in the community includes service as treasurer for the Westend Steelers Basketball Association, president of the Westmount School Association and St. Agnes Junior High Parent/Teacher Association. She was pivotal in the development of the neighborhood park on Mumford Road to provide space for both students and seniors to gather and assisted with the fundraising campaign to refurbish the Westmount School gymnasium.
Knowing the value that sport brings to youths, Malay has also coached several teams including basketball, volleyball, and soccer. She volunteers at the Daily Bread, an outreach program, helping community members experiencing homelessness and food insecurity.
“Tonya Malay is everything the people of Halifax Chebucto would want in an MLA – caring, deeply involved in her community and running for public office for all the right reasons,” said Premier Tim Houston. “Tonya will make sure that the priorities of Halifax Chebucto are heard and acted on at the table where government decisions are made.”
Premier Tim Houston’s PC Team has delivered record investments in healthcare, housing and infrastructure. The Houston PCs are also providing tax relief, while at the same time fighting against the Liberal carbon tax.
