NDP candidate supports defunding police

BROOKFIELD, N.S. - Claudia Chender’s NDP needs to come clean about risking the safety of Nova Scotians, with one of their candidate’s strong support for defunding police.

As a Halifax regional councilor, Sackville-Uniacke NDP candidate Lisa Blackburn said that the 2022 Defund Police report written by anti-police activist El Jones for the Halifax Board of Police Commissioners was “everything I wanted it to be and then some.”  Blackburn also led the charge to get the report implemented.

Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley PC candidate Scott Armstrong said Nova Scotians should be worried about the NDP’s true agenda when it comes to police and public safety.

“Whether served by the RCMP or a municipal police force, Nova Scotians deserve to know that when they need police to keep the peace, they will be properly supported,” said Armstrong. “The last thing we need are MLAs who want to defund the police.”

Chender is working hard to elect anti-police candidate Blackburn, having campaigned in the Sackville-Uniacke constituency early her first week on the election campaign trail.

“Why is Claudia Chender so anxious to get a defund police activist in the Legislature?” asked Armstrong.  “The NDP needs to come clean on how much they want to actually defund police.”

The PC government launched a comprehensive review of provincial policing that involves diverse stakeholders and both municipal and RCMP representatives. The PCs also updated the policing standards for the first time since 2003, which was a recommendation of the Mass Casualty Commission.
