Yesterday in the Legislature, the NDP MLA Paul Wozney criticized Premier Tim Houston for unequivocally standing up for veterans rights to wear their uniforms at Remembrance Day ceremonies and for stating that public servants in Klu Klux Klan uniforms should be fired without delay.
Wozney said that Premier Tim Houston “put a chill over the public service” this Fall when he stated that public servants would be fired for wearing KKK uniforms and when he defended veterans rights’ to wear their uniforms after a school told them not to on Remembrance Day.
“The PC Party will always stand up for veterans and against any representation of the Klu Klux Klan,” said Scott Armstrong, MLA for Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley. “The NDP is showing that their values are not Nova Scotian values when it comes to intolerance and supporting those who have fought for our freedoms.”
Referring to an incident at a Cape Breton firehall from this Fall, Wozney stated that public servants in KKK uniforms should be “subject to appropriate scrutiny under their collective agreement or under the terms of their employment for appropriate discipline.” Wozney also pondered if the Premier’s decisive statements towards those supporting the KKK were “justified or unjustified.”
“It is a sad day when a political party would be so overtly partisan that they would put down veterans and protect those supporting the KKK if it means criticizing the government,” added Armstrong.
