NDP Misleads on Rental Increases Because of Typo, Bad Math

Halifax, NS - Nova Scotia PC candidate Scott Armstrong says the Nova Scotia NDP made a mistake when analyzing rent increases.

In their November 12, 2024, press release, the Nova Scotia NDP stated, “When Tim Houston was elected Premier in August of 2021, the average one-bedroom apartment was $1,151. Since that time the cost has skyrocketed to $1,974 — an $823 increase per month or 71.5 per cent. In the last 12 months, costs have risen 12.6 per cent.”

The press release linked to Rentals.ca numbers, but nowhere on that site does it indicate that rent in 2021 was $1,151. According to the site, the average cost of a one-bedroom apartment in Halifax in 2021 was $1,515. This error led to their inflated inflation number.

“The NDP’s bad math led to them misleading Nova Scotians,” said Armstrong. “Chender’s team is either incapable of doing this work or is guilty of intentionally misleading the public.”

Armstrong said this is typical NDP math.

“Chender is promising over $1 billion in new spending, but her team can’t even properly calculate the rent growth rate,” said Armstrong. “Maybe that’s why they are rolling out promises not costed as part of their platform.”

Armstrong pointed to the recently announced buy-local program, which needs to be added to the NDP platform costing document.

“Claudia’s team didn’t do basic math correctly, leading to misleading Nova Scotians,” said Armstrong. “And now we know she didn’t cost one of her central economic promises.”

“Claudia must apologize to Nova Scotians for misleading them.”
