NDP Opposed To Tax Cuts for Nova Scotians

SHELBURNE – Nolan Young, PC MLA for Shelburne said the NDP’s opposition to today’s announced sales tax cut shows that NDP leader Claudia Chender is all talk and no action when it comes to providing meaningful tax relief to Nova Scotians.

“We want to put more money back in the pockets of Nova Scotians,” said Young. “This is the first ever reduction to Nova Scotia’s sales tax and our last budget provided the largest income tax break in the province’s history.”

"The NDP talks a lot about making life more affordable for Nova Scotians, but when they have the opportunity to support a meaningful tax cut, their leader won't support it."

The new sales tax in Nova Scotia will be 14 per cent, down from 15 per cent.

Following Premier Tim Houston’s announcement of the first HST cut in the province’s history, Chender refused to commit to upholding the historic tax cut.

Also, beginning January 1, 2025, the province will index personal income tax brackets and credits, saving Nova Scotians more than $160 million in taxes annually by 2028. This measure was included in the 2024 budget.

“The NDP voted against income tax relief in the last budget and, today, NDP leader Claudia Chender spoke against sales tax relief,” said Young. “The NDP wants you to think it can tax you more while making your life more affordable - Nova Scotians know that isn’t true.”
