HALIFAX, N.S. - Claudia Chender says she supports more money for housing, but she demanded her caucus vote against numerous housing investments.
“The NDP leader is not serious about housing,” said PC candidate Brendan Maguire. “They voted against historic investments in public and affordable housing.”
Maguire said that since taking office, the Houston government’s five-year housing plan has met or exceeded all targets, putting more people in housing faster. Housing starts are up 38 percent, and the path has been cleared to create an additional 26,519 housing units—over half the 2028 goal.
“The work we are doing is making it easier to build and is getting Nova Scotians into homes faster,” said Maguire. “We are working with our partners to create the conditions for the additional 41,200 housing units - we are more than halfway to our goal in the first year.”
“Our approach is working, and we have no intention of slowing down.”
Here is a list of our housing accomplishments:
-
The plan aims to create the conditions for 41,200 units in 5 years. We’ve already paved the way for 26,519 new units in the first year.
-
Affordability has been improved for 10,412 households. 17,250 households is the 5-year goal.
-
We froze development fees in HRM and cut the provincial portion of the HST for new rentals.
-
290 first-time homebuyers were supported through the Down Payment Assistance Program with an increased investment of over $3.5 million.
-
277 publicly owned affordable housing units have been upgraded. Our goal is to upgrade 900 units by 2028.
-
Our work has enabled 2,073 affordable and supportive housing units.
“Claudia Chender demanded her caucus vote against or attempt to block these measures,” said Maguire.
