The following is a statement from Tim Halman, MLA for Dartmouth East, and Progressive Conservative Critic for Education and Early Childhood Education.
I’m pleased to see that the government has finally listened to the students, coaches, community groups, and opposition MLAs who have been calling for the reopening of school gyms in the evenings for many weeks - after a lack of proper planning by the Liberal government left them closed.
There are still no details on the timeline for all schools and communities and I question why this was not included in Minister Churchill’s back to school plan from the beginning.
Sports and recreational activities are important for the mental health of the students, seniors, and community members who use school gyms for exercise and social opportunities. Mental health concerns are real, and have only been made worse this year as a result of isolations and uncertainties.
The only way this Liberal government takes action is when facing pressure from communities across Nova Scotia. Thank you to all those who reached out to me over the past few weeks and who made your voices known to the government.
Our children and community members can now enjoy evening activities as a result of your actions.
