Statistics Canada reports Nova Scotia a national leader in residential building

DARTMOUTH, N.S. – New figures released by Statistics Canada earlier this week show that Nova Scotia residential building permits increased almost four times the national average in the first nine months of 2024.

Residential building permits in Nova Scotia increased 19.2% from January to September 2024 compared with the same period in 2023.   The national change was an increase of 4.9%.

“Thanks to unprecedented action by Team Tim Houston, Nova Scotia is building new homes after more than a decade of neglect under the previous Liberal and NDP governments,” said Tim Halman, PC candidate for Dartmouth East.  “Nova Scotians have a clear choice on housing – make it happen for more housing under Premier Tim Houston and the PCs or going back to making excuses by the Liberals and the NDP.”

Zach Churchill’s Liberals and Claudia Chender’s NDP have voted against the following measures put in place by Tim Houston’s PCs:

  • Developed Nova Scotia’s first housing plan to support the creation of 41,200 new homes;
  • Grew affordable housing, creating the conditions to support 17,250 more affordable units;
  • Removing barriers to housing starts by amending the Halifax Regional Municipality Charter to shorten the approval for residential housing developments; and
  • Made the largest investment in public housing in 30 years.

“Churchill’s Liberals and Chender’s NDP left a deep hole on housing that we have been working hard to fill,” added Halman, recently named Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance and Treasury Board. "We went from do-nothing governments under the NDP and Liberals to a government that makes things happen."
