Statement from Tim Houston on the St. Mary's Bay conflict

The following is a statement from Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Houston issued today, September 18, 2020:

The ongoing conflict in St. Mary’s Bay in Southwestern Nova Scotia deserves nothing less than the full attention of both the federal and provincial governments.

Today, I wrote to Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, Bernadette Jordan and Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Keith Colwell to call for immediate intervention, and stress the need for a peaceful resolution. The federal government must step in and bring calm and common sense. They have to answer the hard questions and provide direction.

It is equally incumbent upon the provincial government to accept that they have a role to play in the regulation and enforcement of buying. They should be tracking what is being sold in order to enforce any illegal sales.

Now is the time for leadership, to get to the table to have dialogue with all parties, defuse the situation and seek a resolution. Government needs to use all available tools to defuse tensions.

Progressive Conservative Fisheries Critic Keith Bain, and local representatives MLA Colton LeBlanc and MP Chris D’Entremont have also issued correspondence pleading with the government to intervene.

Time is of the essence. Immediate action by both levels of government must be taken.
